826NYC presents this year’s Young Authors’ Book Project book release party on Monday, December 15 at Ginny’s Supper Club in East Harlem. 6th and 7th grade students from P. S. 7 Samuel Stern will celebrate the release of their class anthology “Chicken Makes the Ice Cream Taste Better: Stories on food and community.” This event will feature a short reading by students, followed by a book signing and reception. The book includes a foreword by chef and owner of Red Rooster and Ginny’s Supper Club, Marcus Samuelsson. Mr. Samuelsson writes:
“One of my greatest joys in being a chef is listening to the way people talk about food and their food experiences and seeing this change as the food scene changes. The students of P.S. 7 have rich, thoughtful memories. I read these pages and I feel as though I’m standing in their kitchens, hearing the sizzle in the pan and smelling dinner on the table.”
This event is the culmination of a 6-week in-schools book project with 826NYC and Edible Schoolyard NYC. Working closely with teachers, 826NYC matches a well-known guest author/figure and volunteers with students at a school for a semester-long writing and publishing project. 826NYC staff work closely with a teacher in the school to determine the subject of the project that aligns with the teacher’s current curriculum and Common Core standards. The topic of food was especially appropriate for the students at PS 7 who participate in integrated seed-to-table gardening and cooking classes run by Edible Schoolyard NYC. These students are learning the knowledge and skills to make healthier food choices through this special in-school programming.
826NYC volunteers worked with students on a weekly basis to assist them as they write and edit their pieces. The students’ stories, essays and/or poems are ultimately collected and professionally published. Edible Schoolyard NYC works with these same students, transforming their hearts, minds, and eating habits through an integrated seed-to-table education.
“Chicken Makes the Ice Cream Taste Better: Stories on food and community” is available for purchase at the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. or online at www.826nyc.org. All proceeds benefit 826NYC’s free student programming.
This event is made possible through the generous support from our partners: Edible Schoolyard NYC, Marcus Samuelsson and the Ginny’s Supper Club Team, and our 826NYC volunteers.
