Mayor Bill DeBlasio put in the official bid to have The Barclay’s Center play host to the 2016 National Democratic Convention. DeBlasio described the borough as the perfect match for the convention location. “The values of the Democratic Party — inclusion, diversity, compassion — are part of our city’s spirit” he said in his bid letter. The borough would benefit from the convention attendees coming to town as well. The restaurants, bars, hotels, and tourist attractions would certainly see a spike in income from the thousands of visitors. The borough is also planned to have over 2,000 hotel rooms by that time. The last time a political convention took place in the area was in 2004, when the Republican Convention was held in Manhattan.
