There are a million things to do this summer in Brooklyn, and if you’re not careful, a multitude of ways to blow your hard earned cash. Thankfully, we are sharing the best 8 ways to enjoy your summer in town while still saving for that vacation your planning for when you really need it most, during another polar vortex…
1. Catch a free movie under the stars– We love outdoor movies! Check out Summerscreen at McCarren Park which runs every Wednesday in July, Syfy Movies with a View at Brooklyn Bridge Park which runs every Thursday from July 10 to August 28, or Red Hook Flicks on Valentino Pier which runs every Tuesday in July and August. Movies + Music + Food, can’t beat it.
2. Soak Up River Fun– Every Saturday morning at 10am and every Thursday at 5:30pm, The Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse on Pier 2 offers free kayaking! They recommend going early as lines get pretty long. OR head over to Red Hook Boaters on Valentino Pier on Sundays between 1pm and 5pm or on Thursdays between 6pm and 8pm. Join in the beach cleanup afterwards!
3. Break A Sweat– Before you hit the beach, hit up a free workout class in Prospect Park or in Brooklyn Bridge Park. From Pilates to strength training workouts to volleyball clinics, you can find it all, and the best part is, it’s all FREE.
4. Take A Dip– June 27th marks the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge Pop Up Pool! Swimmers can swim FREE in 45 minute increments from 10am – 6pm daily. The pool area also features a beach with lounge chairs, and a refreshment stand (not free), Lizzmonade. After 6pm, stick around as Lizzmonade serves up Sangrias, craft beers and wine.
5. Free Booze!- Sometimes, to beat the heat you need to head indoors. So why not take a free weekend tour of The Brooklyn Brewery! Tours start at 1pm and run every half hour until 4pm. Tickets are distributed an hour (or an hour and a half) before the tour start time, and you must have a ticket to join the tour. The tours are only free on Saturdays and Sundays (However, during the week they are only $10 for a small batch tour). You can also bring in food and eat at one of their many picnic tables. Purchase a few beer tokens to sip on their tasty brews.
6. Fireworks!– The Coney Island Boardwalk hosts a free fireworks display every Friday night from June 20-August 8 at 9:30 pm. Best viewing is between W. 10th St and W. 12th St. OR the NY Philharmonic Concert and Fireworks in Prospect Park will take place on Wednesday July 9, 2014. Concert begins at 8pm and will be held on the Long Meadow Ballfield. The fireworks display will start directly after the concert.
7. Get Cultured– Head over to the Brooklyn Museum for Target First Saturdays. The museum hosts engaging and eclectic free art and entertainment programs from 5pm – 11pm on the first Saturday of every month.
8. Get Your Groove On– Shake yo’ thang outdoors all summer long with Celebrate Brooklyn! Almost every day the park is hosting live music, so don’t miss it!
