Chicago features the beautiful beach of Lake Michigan. San Francisco residents watch the sun set over the bay with their toes in the sand. Now, us New Yorkers will have a beach of our own right in Manhattan on the East River! Just below the Financial District and under the Brooklyn Bridge, 11,000 square feet of land will be transformed into a beach area with terraced seating, a kayak launch, fishing area, and concession stands. Swimming is discouraged due to the pollution in the East River, however, this section will bring new life to the currently fenced off and trash ridden land. This project will also contribute to Bloomberg’s storm protection plan of building wetlands to protect the city from future natural weather threats. Formal plans for the beach will be announced on Thursday, August 8th. Stay tuned!
